Matthew Archambault specializes in historical young adult and young reader books but has done everything from horror to romance book covers. Matthew reveals “I’m very good working with kids and their full range of emotion. I can have joy in my work, I can have anticipation.” Using oil paint on illustration board allows him to work with the media slowly or quickly depending on how he manipulates it. He uses a realistic style and varies the color palette depending on the mood of the book.

Recently, he worked on a picture book called Dreams to Grow On that depicts a little girl dreaming of what she will become when she grows up. He provided concept dummies for the book drawing images from his imagination. “The client liked the fact that I was willing to go the extra mile on the project, above what they would normally expect. I coordinated all the models, conducted photo shoots, did tons of research, lots of final drawings, as well as color comps for color choices,” notes Matthew.

Matthew derives great satisfaction from his work. He enjoys working with art directors, and each new project brings the excitement of a new challenge and a new opportunity to learn. His publishing clients include: Bantam Doubleday Dell, Harcourt Brace, Llewellyn, Moody Press, New Hope Publishing, Pacific Press, Richard Owen Publishing and Scholastic.

Matthew lives in East Islip, New York with his wife Melissa and pug dog, Rockwell. They are expecting their first child in September 2002. He graduated from the School of Visual Arts with a BFA, where he currently teaches two classes. Matthew enjoys home restoration projects, bicycling, teaching others to draw, collecting books and going to bookstores, and playing with pug Rockwell, but he most loves to spend time with Melissa working on their dreams.

In 1990, Matt graduated from the School of Visual Arts with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Since then he has had a very busy career. Illustrating books has always been a passion. He is very grateful to earn a living doing what he loves.

In 1997, he was invited to be an adjunct professor at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Currently, he teachs a drawing workshop class along with an illustration portfolio class. Giving back all of the knowledge he's gained over the years to his students gives him a great deal of satisfaction.
